For the Emerging Professional

Our Being black in Canada program serves the emerging professional. Presented by Netflix, in collaboration with the National Bank, Telefilm Canada and Canada Council for the Arts, the Fabienne Colas Foundation’s Being Black in Canada represents Canada’s largest mentorship, training, and creation program entirely dedicated to Black filmmakers.

Founded in 2012

Founded in 2012, the program gives a voice and a platform to creators who would not otherwise be seen or heard. It enables Black emerging filmmakers, aged 18 to 30, from Black communities across Canada the tools to create their first documentary shorts.

The emerging filmmakers are guided through the many steps in audiovisual production (screenwriting, directing, editing, post-production, etc.) and the creation of a documentary. This process is carried out under the tutelage of industry experts with professional coaching and equipment.

Awards and Accomplishments

BBIC represents Canada’s largest incubator dedicated to Black Filmmakers, and creation program to be entirely dedicated to Black filmmakers.
BBIC films won BEST DIRECTION IN A DOCUMENTARY SERIES at the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards (CSA).

BBIC films have been presented as world premieres and discussed in panels at International Black Film Festival across Canada.
BBIC films have been aired on both French and English TV: Télé-Québec and the CBC! And is still available for streaming on CBC GEM.

Aiming to train over 300 entrepreneurs by 2024

We have trained over 60 Black Filmmakers/Entrepreneurs through our Being Black In Canada incubation program so far, and by the end of 2024 we will have supported more than 300 new Black filmmakers/entrepreneurs and 150 alumni in the launch of their careers in TV and film. That’s over 300 entrepreneurs poised to build their businesses and hire fellow Black filmmakers in front of and behind the camera, creating jobs and economic growth in the industry.
